Out of the Mouths of Babes- December 2019
The above is often quoted out of context, when someone has noted a particularly wise statement made by a small child. However, when we consider this quotation from Psalm 8, we should be awed and amazed at the value God places on children and on their understanding and faith. The Psalm says:
O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise,
because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
Christ quoted this Psalm, in response indignation expressed by the chief priests and teachers of the law at the children in Jerusalem for shouting out “Hosanna to the Son of David.” The purpose for which God has ordained praise from the lips of children is for the defeat and silence of our foes. The enemies of the Lord are defeated not by the strong (proud), but by the weakest (most trusting) amongst us!
These thoughts have come to me because of conversations with my grandson, Aiden. I continue to rejoice and be amazed at the truths of God’s word which he expresses. This “praise from the mouth of babes and infants” was illustrated also by my 5-year old great-niece who, on being told by her parents that her grandmother would be going to heaven soon, said, in a prolonged conversation as she thought of the implications of this: “I’ll miss her but she will be with God.…and Esther will be there… and David …but Goliath will not be there, and the devil will not be there because Jesus stood on his (the devil’s) head.” This summation of Biblical doctrine by Demi, the adopted daughter of my nephew, whose circumstances of birth and background have created some disabilities, was of particular joy to her parents who had not previously been able to assess her understanding of the truths of scripture. Truly, from the lips of infants the Lord has ordained praise!
